Parsing Trends: Covered in Candy Buttons
Happy Friday, Blogosphere!
This week, we've been looking at some fun handbag trends: tiny, oversized, hands-free, and now the embellished.
Does anyone remember that scene from Love Actually when Harry's getting a necklace gift wrapped? The clerk has already boxed it, bagged it, and sprinkled it in potpourri when he announces that he's almost finished. "Almost finished?" Harry cries, "What else can there be? Are you going to dip it in yogurt? Cover it with chocolate buttons?"
That's kind of how I feel when I look at this season's heavily embellished bags - on the one hand, they're delightfully sweet and pretty... yet, to the Harry's of the world, they're totally over-the-top and unnecessary.
- Sweet & Innocent
To get in on this sweet look without giving yourself a toothache, try:
- A smaller bag
- Smaller-scale embellishments
- Painted/printed details (not 3D)
- One bold appliqué (rather than several small ones)
- Low contrast between the bag's body and its adornments
I actually do own an embellished bag myself, but I find it hard to wear often because of the set color combinations and my low tolerance for details. I love it when I wear it, though, and the fact that it's a cat head makes me very happy. :)
Next week, we'll look at some jewelry trends, and then it's on to Figure Flattery Month in April!
