Parsing Trends: Flashy Feet

Spring is almost officially here (my calendar says it starts on the 20th) so to help you prepare we'll be continuing with Spring trends through the end of the month!

We're still going through all the different shoe trends - and there are a lot of them - so today let's look at some flashy feet. It really doesn't matter if you're in flats, flatforms, platforms, wedges, or stilettos this year; whatever your preferred footwear, feel free to pile on some crazy details. It doesn't even matter which details, so long as they are bold and attention-grabbing.

Loud shoes do make a loud statement, however, so before you choose yours, take a quick moment to think about how they may reflect on your personality in different situations:

Positive Connotations:

  • Whimsical
  • Free
  • Cheerful
  • Enthusiastic
  • Social
  • Outgoing
  • Different
  • Exciting

Negative Connotations:

  • Childish
  • Wild
  • Silly
  • Histrionic
  • Needy
  • Exhibitionist
  • Demanding
  • Unpredictable
  • Unreliable

Tone It Down

There are so many super-cute shoes out there this season that you should be able to find one that hits the right levels of eccentricity for you. If you want to highlight your cheerful & outgoing side without spilling over into a wild & crazy look, for example, look for details like:

  • A slim, form-fitting upper
  • Classic shape (slim heel, almond toe, no straps, etc.)
  • A single fun detail (rather than several together)
  • Uniform color throughout the shoe
  • Low contrast between the main shoe color and any embellishments
  • Neutral colors
  • Matte or sueded texture
  • An otherwise conservative/simple outfit (solids, neutrals, jeans)

I have a pretty loud shoe personality, so you will see me in rhinestone booties, lucite, galaxy print, and leopard pony hair even when flashy feet are NOT trendy! How do you feel about them? Are they part of your signature style? Will you try out the idea for a season while they're in style? Or maybe your teeth itch like someone just invited you to a warehouse rave in their way-back machine? There is no wrong answer. :)
