Parsing Trends: Dare to be Bare

Through the end of the month, we're taking a closer look at some of the biggest Spring 2017 Trends and examining what they say about the people who wear them. Yesterday, we focused on bold, wide stripes - and today we'll discuss bare shoulders.

Bare shoulders are an evolution from the Cold Shoulder trend from previous years, however the huge difference is that, instead of relying on cut-out details on the shoulders alone, this new trend bares at least one entire shoulder through to the center of the chest. I.e., there ain't no way to wear a normal bra with this one!

So what would that fact say about you?

Positive Connotations

  • Relaxed/Leisurely (Not going to work today!)
  • Flirtatious
  • Sexy
  • Outgoing
  • Fashion-Forward, Modern
  • Beachy/Tropical/Resort-Ready
  • Confident

Negative Connotations

  • Idle/Dilettante (Not going to work today!)
  • Unprofessional
  • Forward/Seductive
  • Exhibitionist or Flamboyant
  • Foppish
  • Impractical
  • Conceited
  • Immodest

Once again, it depends on your audience. Depending on your sphere of influence, people may pick up on different things. This look may be just the ticket if you're trying to inject better physical chemistry into your dating life - but it may be totally counter-productive if you find yourself always wishing that guys would make more eye contact (millions of years of evolution make them want to look, ladies; you have to help them out sometimes).

If you like the idea of this look but want to tone it down, you can try:

  • Conservative, covered bottoms (trousers, midis, maxis)
  • Boat-neck tops instead of bare-shouldered ones
  • Statement necklaces that "fill in" the chest and provide more coverage
  • Cut-out/Cold Shoulder looks which allow the use of a regular bra

This one is too impractical for my lifestyle, since I do need a fair amount of chest support and may not always have a perfectly un-tan-lined shoulder area after hiking in the sun. This look also really widens the chest visually, which I don't enjoy. Any takers on this trend?
