Parsing Trends: Yikes, Stripes
We're looking at Spring 2017 trends this week, and today it's all about big, bold stripes!
These stripes are everywhere, in all different colors, but black and white is the boldest, most high-contrast of them all. So what does this look say about you when you wear it? Let's take a look at some of the different associations with bold stripes. This is by no means a complete list, as everyone will have their own associations with stripes, but it's a good brainstorm to get your wheels turning at home.
- Sports (Rugby, Motocross, Horse Racing...)
- Whimsical (a la Tim Burton)
- Not serious
- Dark (a la Tim Burton)
Remember that you don't have to wear head-to-toe bold stripes! If you want to project just a little drama, for example, you could temper the effect of a bold stripe in a few ways:
- Luxurious, grown-up fabric
- Smaller scale print
- Use as an accessory (bag, shoe, belt)
- Conservative/Minimal/Refined garment cut
- Lower contrast stripe colors (e.g.; brown & black)
Does this leave you feeling better about bold stripes? Worse?? Do you want to save them for the weekend and stop wearing them to the office? Save them for a design pitch and stop wearing them on first dates? There's noting inherently good or bad about any of these trends; it's simply a matter of whether or not their effects will serve you well!
Oh, and there are some different stripes popping up this season as well... they are smaller and provide a very different fee. More soon!
