I hope everyone had a happy father's day out in the Blogosphere! I had an amazingly fun trip celebrating my dad and sister, so I wanted to share my carryon-only summer travel capsule with you - just in time for those long 4th of July weekend trips!

My family had planned mostly casual activities, and the weather was going to be extremely hot and humid. I wanted to stay cool outdoors, coverup in any intense air conditioning, and above all avoid checking a bag! Here is my strategy:

A Top a Day - The hot weather was sure to bring out my "glow," so I built gross, sweaty, end-of day tops into the plan. Just in case we didn't have time for laundry, I treated my tops as consumables for this trip.

Mix & Match Colors - I didn't know our exact itinerary, so I had to be able to mix & match on the fly. To make this easier, I limited myself to a color palette of orange, blue, and black, with the green jacket thrown in as my one accent color.

All About Airflow - Absolutely everything I brought had to provide good airflow! This meant a looser fit as well as breathable fabrics like tencel, lyocell, linen, 100% cotton denim, and lightweight silk. For jewelry, I chose leather instead of metal. This ensured that no piece proved useless in the heat.

Convertible Accessories - My wrap necklace was able to adjust to fit any neckline, hang as a long pendant, and wrap around my wrist as a bracelet - one accessory for every outfit! The mini turnlock crossbody bag was unobtrusive enough to take to everything from the ballgame to specialty cocktails.

Sleek Walking Shoes - All of my shoes had to be my most comfortable heel height and slim-fitting. The comfort and slim fit were key to re-using the same shoes across outfits for day and night.

The best part is that all of this fit in my under-seat friendly 16" carryon! I just. hate. waiting. at the baggage carousel and worrying that my precious clothes may have gone missing. For more on how to fit it all in, check out how I plan and pack the least number of items possible.

Are you going away for the upcoming holiday? I'd love to hear where you're going and what you're packing!
