Mythological Metallics

As Memorial Day approaches with tons of sales to springboard us into summer, it's an excellent time to catch a deal on summer trends - like these laser-cut metallic sandals. Reminiscent of Greek mythology (check out the center image with the Hermes foot wings!), these styles have elements of gladiator sandals like t-straps, ankle straps, and shield-like vamps - but they are far more delicate, polished, and pretty than the typical gladiator.

Dressy metallic sandals can be a great way to spruce up everyday casual items for Memorial Day barbeques - they add a little something special without veering off into an inappropriately stuffy or formal dress code. But if you've been used to chunkier shoes like Birkenstocks, Tevas, and two-strap minimalist sandals, you may find your filigreed feet hard to style, because they create a much smaller and slimmer profile on your foot. The laser cut detailing basically looks like lace, and it could be easy to skew too top-heavy in these delicate shoes.

In order to feel grounded in a delicate shoe, the design elements to mimic in the rest of your outfit are:

  • Light/Airy
  • Slim
  • Delicate

Treat even flats and sandals as if they were strappy dress pumps, even they are casual flats. Choose light and airy fabrications (knit linen), colors (pastels, nudes, whites), and cuts (open neckline, short sleeves, sleeveless, spaghetti straps). For bottoms, make sure they are either slim-fitting and tailored or made of a breezy, gauzy material that floats a bit when you move. And finish off the look with accessories that echo the sandals' thin straps - this can be done with thin jewelry (slim bangles, tennis bracelets) or even with a thin-strapped crossbody bag.

If your body shape is already top-heavy, take extra care to avoid tops and jackets that are:

  • Stiff
  • Wide/Boxy
  • Crewneck/Boatneck
  • Voluminous in the sleeve

If your Memorial Day plans include dressier events, you can also make this shoe work double-duty as a pretty addition to maxi dresses, floaty sundresses, capris, or slim dress pants.
