As much as I love black and find it super useful as a basic color, wearing all black from head to toe can be a bad idea for a variety of reasons:

  • Pure black is harsh and unflattering for most skin tones.
  • Too much black looks intimidating and unfriendly.
  • Flat black fabrics can look generic and careless when worn alone.

Still, even after knowing all this, there are days when I simply find myself reaching for black head-to-toe. When this happens, it's great to have a few "third piece" options to throw over everything and soften up the all-black look. This third piece could come in the form of a:

  • Vest
  • Scarf/Necktie
  • Bib necklace
  • Statement Brooch
  • Headscarf
  • Blazer/Jacket

Your third piece should essentially water-down the effect of the black and correct the levels of color and brightness so that your overall outfit is harmonious with your own coloring.

Keep this in mind as we move into winter and more and more black options pop up at the stores for cold weather!
