Last week, my edgy and fashion-forward friend Anna challenged me to try a dark plum lipstick - so here I am: out of my comfort zone and rocking a much darker lip than usual!

I was a bit scared to go out and buy a new product, so I mixed up a concoction of things I already had in my drawer: NYX burgundy lip liner, NARS Damage lipstick, and just a little Smashbox Disco Rose gloss. It's not quite as purple as some of the plum lips I've seen, but it is within range based on my Googling

With such a bold lip color, I thought it was the perfect chance to wear a low-contrast pairing near my face. This type of gray-on-gray look makes me feel delightfully moody and fall-appropriate, but it usually looks drab against my skin. The lipstick really does solve that problem by providing the deep, saturated color I usually look for in a top.

For the rest of the look, I went as all-out-autumnal as I could in light of the fact that we are back to sunny, 75-degree days here in LA. The sheer top and fur bag give the illusion of warmth without boiling me alive.

What do you think? I normally shy away from very bright and very dark lipsticks because I'm terrified of turning into my mother, but I know it's a very current and useful look!
