Mkay, it isn’t the 4th yet. But events have left our plans for The Day a bit up in the air, so I decided to wear a pre-party outfit today, just in case I don’t get the opportunity to prance around in a pretty outfit tomorrow.

Dressing for the 4th is always interesting because, while I always do want to be festive and not feel like a too-good-to-celebrate Snooty Fashion Person, I also really really refuse to spend money on things like sequin applique American flag tee shirts - they just aren’t “me” enough to do anything but sit in the closet the rest of the year.

So with that in mind, my strategy is to look at holidays like any other day and ask: what are the planned activities? What’s the weather like? How much walking/standing will I do? What are we celebrating? In this case, I wanted something easy and breezy that could take the heat, allow for social eating, and be easily covered up with a light jacket after dark. I wanted to be able to walk easily yet look a tick taller in photos and feel a little fancy. I also wanted to be able to stuff a cover up into my bag while not in use.

Working within the traditional red-white-and-blue color combo, I chose the Free People slip because it is made of breathable cotton that feels good against the skin and won’t turn my summer “glow” into a soggy sweat marsh. The Vince sheer dress popped easily on top because, well, it’s blue and allowed the red to peek through. It’s also silk and more breathable than some of my polyester options. It is also slim and structured just enough to look neat and elegant while also fitting loosely enough to allow for serious nommins. Nom nom nom...

For an average weekday, I probably would have worn my Mephisto slide sandals but, for a dressier and more festive look, I’m in love with these Report Adelina gladiators. I waited until they went on super sale, because my shoe collection is already daunting, but the dainty straps combined with the traditionally warrior-esque styling speaks to me loud and clear. I have already worn them several times with baggy linen pants and distressed denim walk shorts. I love how they add a dressy air while still feeling edgy, modern, and rugged.

Last but not least, here’s the cat bag, because 1) it matches 2) it fits all my stuff inside and 3) ... cat bag!

Have a safe and sane 4th of July, everyone!
