Slinky “Coats” Are My Favorite Summer A/C Busters

Occasion: Personal shopping, library, household errands.

Dress Code: Smart casual

Outdoor Temps: 86°F (and humid)

Activity Level: Moderate

Wearing: DIY light cotton shorts made from men’s jeans, T Alexander Wang T-shirt, Haute Hippie silk anorak, John Varvatos sunnies, Kenneth Cole Reaction booties, Kelsi Dagger bag.

This is not typically what I think of wearing when I envision “high summer,” but I knew I had a long day of ins-n-outs ahead of me - and if you have ever been involved in hot summers, you know that overcompensation is a gross understatement when it comes to retail air conditioning. So over my standard SoCal tee and jeans shorts, I tossed on this lightweight silk anorak from Haute Hippie. The print is summery, the skull on the back makes me happy, and the covered skin made me feel better about hiding my un-pedicured toes in booties.

Thin, unlined, breathable toppers have not always been readily available. In the past, I’ve been quite angry to always find a hot polyester lining inside all the promising linen jackets. I have been super pleased with my little coats and jackets in silk, rayon, and linen this year - so much so that I have acquired two more for myself: an army green anorak and a trench in classic beige. I love how they keep the sun from scorching me in traffic, let enough airflow in to cool me on a hot expanse of asphalt parking lot, and keep the chill at bay once inside. No need to strip and bundle and strip and bundle and strip and bundle all the livelong day (that drives me insane and makes me feel even hotter).
