Unplanned Riff on the Sweater Vest

When I packed for our holiday trip to San Diego, I had intended to layer an old cashmere sweater over this shirt... but lo and behold, upon removal from the suitcase, I realized it was pilled to the point of no return - it had to be demoted to loungewear immediately.
But what to do? It was too cool to wear the shirt alone, so I popped on this shell that I had brought in case of some unexpected "fancy" event (to be worn alone with black skinny pants and heels).
Overall, I was quite pleased with the effect, which felt like an inversion of the classic sweater-vest-plus-collared-shirt combo, which usually calls for a crisp shirt and a soft vest. The photos didn't turn out as well as I'd hoped, but I did receive compliments on the outfit throughout the day, and that's a win in my book!
Still, this particular creative victory could not have been possible if I hadn't tried to pack light and restrict myself to mix-and-match-able set of colors. Thank heaven for travel neuroses!
Happy Christmas to all who celebrate, and may all your holiday travels end well. :)
